Berk's Grapevine

Interview the Dragons 2 Game Designers

A few weeks ago, we heard that there would be a new game for How to Train Your Dragon 2 available on the Wii, Wii U, PS3, 3DS, and Xbox 360. Now, we have the amazing opportunity to interview the producer and developers of this game!

As with previous interviews on Berk's Grapevine, all questions will be reader-submitted! If you have a question for the game designers, leave it as a comment on this post! Or, if you think someone else has a good question, upvote their comment.

If you're interested in art or animation, game design, development, what it's like working with DreamWorks to produce a game, or anything else, write your question below in the comments! You can also discuss the game in this topic with other Berk's Forumvine members.

Question submission will close on Friday, April 18th!

  1. I have a question.... and it has been buggin me for a while........ In the game, will be restrained to using characters from the movies, or do we have the option to design our own character for the game using a template?.... i mean, I've read other descriptions about the game and i think you can select from a majority of dragon, but i feel it would be cool to have that option of making our own character in some form and way

  2. I have a question.. will there ever be a full PC game made? Y'know, besides school of dragons. I'm in a family that can't afford a system so ya. I won't be able to play on any of those platforms.

    ReplyDelete
  3. 2 questions:
    1. Is there any chance the Grapple Grounder will appear on this game?
    2. How much will the 3ds version differ from all the others?

    ReplyDelete
  4. This is also my question, maybe a bit more specified:

Are there plans to create a PC game based on the Dragons-universe in the future?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Question #1: What was the most difficult part in making this video game?
Question #2: How long does it take to make a video game?

    ReplyDelete
  6. I have a couple of questions. First, will it be an open world game? And secondly, what characters/dragons would we be allowed to play as?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Will be able to tame dragons ( like go to worlds and explore to find dragons)
Also will we be able to customize our dragons like the last one and level them up. Another thing is will it be multiplayer?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Question 1 How long does it take to create/make a game?
Question 2 What is the most difficult part in making this gamem

    ReplyDelete
  9. My main concern is, what will the gameplay be like? And will there be flying/areal stuff involved? Because I found myself...more than a little disappointed that the first movies game was a vs. game. I would like to know what kind of gameplay we can expect! And especially if flying will be worked in.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Is it gonna be like last game and let you choose different dragons like the night fury, deadly nadder, gronkle ect and even new dragons like stormcutters and hobblegrunts if it is like that I think I will buy it

    ReplyDelete
  11. Few questions.

    1) It doesn't seem like it's going to follow the story at all, but I am still curious if it will?
    2) Will players be able to freely fly around places on dragons? (Free roam?)
    3) Playable characters?
    4) Will there only be one playable Night Fury?
    5) Will the game consist of mini games?
    6) Multiplayer?

Sorry for so many, I am very curious. XD I would also pay well over the actual price for a Dragons 2 adventure/rpg.

  12. As Hiccup would say "Thank you for... summing that up."

    ReplyDelete
  13. They can't answer that.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I am about ready to beg them to make a PC version, since school of dragons is really interactive and costs money to do lots of stuff.. Where as a game would be just you and the story line, and there would likely be more detail into it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. How do ya know if they can or not? They working with dreamworks and gaming companies so its a legit question.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm not buying this game I'm going to buy a shooting game not a dragon game

    ReplyDelete
  17. Because this is an interview with the producers and developers of this particular game, all they can tell you is if they are planning to port to PCs.

    ReplyDelete
  18. -sigh- I don't think you're going to be the one picking the questions, though, so ya.. And I am not the only one who appears to appreciate my question, seeing as how it has 4 votes up other then my own.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Which platforms will this game be available on?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Question(s)
    1. Will we get to meet every single new dragon seen in the trailer?
    2. Will we tame the dragons one by one like in Wild Skies?
    3. Are dragons featured from the TV show like Scauldrons and Typhoomerang be featured?
4: Will there be online multiplayer?
    FINAL: Free Roam?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I have one:
Will the game have a similar format as the previous game or will it be more open world with more things to do other than just plain fighting dragons, eg will there be freeplay mode or will you be able to simply mount a dragon and go flying at any point.
    and sorry another one:
What qualifications would someone need to join that sort of industry and work on a future dragons project?

1st: Can Xbox Live players communicate with your friends(OpenWorldVersion)
    2nd: Can we have free-fly or free-roam?
3rd:Can We battle the charecters from the movie HTTYD2?|
4th:Can we free-tame(Like in Cartoon Network's Dragons:Wild Skies) and choose dragons from the movies/series?
5th and finally:Are we able to travel to different parts of berk and other islands?

What isn't the game on ps4 and Xbox one?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thank you to those who voted up; I asked this question because I believe I am not the only one out there who doesn't have a fancy new system to play the dragons games on. Me? I am personally a PC gamer, with an old ps2, so my options for games are limited. Personally, yes, I did once have a WII once.. that was won as a prize in a contest... but it was struck by lightning in a storm back several years ago and is useless now.. and we don't have the money to buy a new system and what not, not with how tight money is.

  32. Oh I too, have some questions:

    1. Does this game serve as a spin-off to the movie? If it's not, does it will have some extras which will give a clue or canon with the events of the movie?
    2. How many dragons in this game available to select?
    3. Is there going to be another game exclusive dragon just like Grapple Grounder in the first movie-tie in game?

  50. Hodor... Hodor... Hodor...?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yup. At some point, we could use another PC Dragon based game... perhaps offline one at that.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Okay, just don't get dissapointed if your question gets picked and you get an evasive answer.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yes, I agree! School of dragons is appealing, but what I don't like is having to pay for all kinds of extras and stuff. With a game you buy it once, its yours, and you work to unlock stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  54. A less laggy one too.. I can't even play SoD it lags so much.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hooooooooooodooooooooorrrrrr!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hodor! Hodor hodor.. rodoh

    ReplyDelete
  57. A PC game would likely be a lot less laggy, as school of dragons is a multiplayer game that has tons of servers, which is the reason it runs slower then a game would. Depending on how many people are on are how fast your game will run.

    ReplyDelete
  58. HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO0OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRR!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Rodoh? thats a new one!
    I like it!
rodoh rodoh rodoh rodoh rodoh rodoh rodoh

    ReplyDelete
  60. Hodor! Hodor hodor hodor?

    ReplyDelete
  61. There is a setting on it that allows you to play by yourself, and even then it still lagged too much for me. It was impossible to catch fish and everything needed to be payed for with freakin gems.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Too much Hordor

    ReplyDelete
  63. Come on guys. Please don't spam under the news anymore. The important comments will be lost.
You have the "Outcast Island" in the forum to say senseless stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Ya I know. I didn't like it that much. Fishing requires you to buy the most advanced rod for it to be remotely possible. (And I am pretty sure before you buy the third rod you have to buy the second rod) After a while I lost interest because they started making levels with all kinds of new things that you had to pay real money for and stuff. I would much rather by a game once then keep paying to play.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I find it funny it's called Outcast Island XD

    ReplyDelete
  66. Exactly. I had to waste basically all of my gems the second I started the game just to buy a rod that made it a tiny bit easier to catch fish. I too, lost interest. haven't played in months.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Will this game focus more on Dragon Racing, or will the player follow the story of the film?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Ya same here. When I got the Part 1 dvd and it had a "special offer" I was like "Ehhh..." cuz it would offer a membership to SoD, but from my experience big companies have a way of offering you a tidbit to get you into buying it, whether you want to or not. Like provide your info, its free for a bit, and then you get stuck paying for it.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Really Nightshade? Really? XD

    ReplyDelete
  70. That's already known. PS3, XB360, Wii, Wii U and 3DS.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Oh, i'm sorry, I mean Hodor.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I started laughing when I looked at top commenter section XD

    ReplyDelete
  73. look at this screenshot!

    ReplyDelete
  74. and you guys thinks that I am spamming XD

    ReplyDelete
  75. I'd really like to know if we'll have the opportunity to fly around freely unlike in the first game where we were timed and limited to where we could go? I love playing games where I can fly freely for example I like the freedom and flight in legend of the guardians the owls of ga'hoole video game

    ReplyDelete
  76. Hodor is Nightshade? For real? D:

    ReplyDelete
  77. I meant ahead of time, when the game actually comes out. If it were an adventure/rpg, and costed about $50 for, lets say the Wii U version, I would be willing to pay at least $60 for it because its a good game. But $50 for a game full of mini games that takes a few days to beat? I probably wouldn't get it...

    ReplyDelete
  78. You've been watching GoT for much too long, old friend...

    ReplyDelete
  79. And you're close to 5000 !!
    Yeah, I'm third ! :)

    ReplyDelete
  80. Same to me. A game where you haven't any story or have beaten it in a few days / hours isn't the $50 - $60 worth

    ReplyDelete
  81. Exactly. As much as I love httyd, I might have to pass and get Mariokart 8 instead. That would last me a very long time.

    ReplyDelete
  82. How many think the characters of HTTYD WOULD MAKE AWESOME JEDI?

    ReplyDelete
  83. 60 days left.

    ReplyDelete
  84. What, noooo, not at all... :)

    ReplyDelete
  85. Hi, you're here ! :)
I saw this avatar in the older post, and I checked the number of comments at once... you can change your name, but YOU CAN'T HIDE !!! XD

    ReplyDelete
  86. Thor, who got 100th ???

    ReplyDelete
  87. XD
So did you get some sleep yet ?

    ReplyDelete
  88. apparently I did, with either:
"Hi :D" or "What, noooo, not at all... :)"

There aren't many comments, so I just watched the time, and took away the 5 latest posts

    ReplyDelete
  89. I have been awake for 38 hours, sleep is an unnecessity XD

    ReplyDelete
  90. How come I almost ever miss those ?? I often arrive just a minute too late !

    ReplyDelete
  91. You react as if it was a surprise XD

    ReplyDelete
  92. 38 hours is a bit of a surprise, yeah :)

    ReplyDelete
  93. okay, now I can comfirm that it is "Hi :D" which is comment 100, it was posted about 1 min earlier than the other one.
You just have bad luck, aaaand you have something to do when you're not at work XD

    ReplyDelete
  94. I could add 10 hours to that, just give me some good series that I can watch, because I'm all out of GoT, I'm waiting for next episode XD

    ReplyDelete
  95. that's tough... you have to wait...
And I can tell you need to sleep now.... you don't make any sense.... Practically asking me to suggest you a new series...aren't you afraid I would come up with weird stuff like in music ? XD

    ReplyDelete
  96. I could always watch some Monty Python movies :P

    ReplyDelete
  97. OK, maybe you don't need me after all to find weird stuff !

    ReplyDelete
  98. BEWARE OF THE KILLER RABBIT! XD

~always, look at the bright si-i-de of life, de dum, de dum de dum de dum~

    ReplyDelete
  99. I love that !!!! (actually, it was bf who showed me the Monty Python !)

    ReplyDelete
  100. update the page and click on my profile, I updated it a little, now you can see my website and my new location! :)

    ReplyDelete
  101. A few. One; how good do you have to be at art? I like art and want to try out animation. Two; is this game going to be as great as it seems?

    ReplyDelete
  102. Nightshade! Why you have to do that?! Now I'm thinking you don't like me! :-/
    btw, it's really quiet today

    ReplyDelete
  103. And now I will be confused by Hodor/Nightshade.... -_-

    ReplyDelete
  104. >:D Maybe I should change my username as well....

    ReplyDelete
  105. I wont update the page, and voilá, your name wont change for me! :P

    ReplyDelete
  106. My question:
Will this game have a story line?

    ReplyDelete
  107. D: I'll find a way....

    ReplyDelete
  108. a story line?
it may have a storyline, but a story and a line, I don't know! :o

    ReplyDelete
  109. And the third world war will begin with people like Nightshade....

    ReplyDelete
  110. Question:
Will it be possible to play as the different teenagers? Possibly Valka? Will the game only encompass racing, or will you have other tasks such as defeating various foes and such?

    Swooshy

    ReplyDelete
  111. I am getting extremely bored.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Sorry, couldn't see it!

    ReplyDelete
  116. Please keep the comments for game discussion and comments only! Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  117. Are the graphics going to be better than the previous game, or about the same? Will we be able to customize our dragon(s)? What characters/ dragons will we be able to use in game?

    ReplyDelete
  118. So will this game follow the plot of the film or differ as the previous one did?

    ReplyDelete
  119. Don't know, maybe we'll get more info later!

    ReplyDelete
  120. Sharmarke AbdirsakApril 13, 2014 at 6:44 PM

Can we have dragon friends and live chat and we can name out dragons without a sorry some one else has that name and we can borrow dragons as well and costomize our characters and update the game for more leves missions like gta also side missions and finally can we switch characters like if we want the change to the dragons or diffrent costomize characters and create lands and make new dragons and slots

    ReplyDelete
  121. Almost every question I have is already mentioned... But why not asking the questions too? :D

    1. Will this game be about HTTYD2?
    2. If the game will be about HTTYD2, are Drago and Valka (and the Bewilderbeasts) going to be in the game, too?
    3. If the game will be about HTTYD2, are we going to see Hiccups Firesword?
    4. Will it be a $50-$60 game (so then we can expect a good game)? / Will it be just a "Racing Game"?
    5. Are you (or DreamWorks) planning to release it for PC too (or at least another PC game)?
    6. Can you tell us a bit about HTTYD2? It doesn't hurt to ask! xD

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

Will we be able to play with fellow Grapeviners, I.e. will there be multiplayer? And if so, will it have a free roam mode (assuming the game is free roam itself)?

  140. I have two to three questions:

    1) As for game development, what was the main priority for this game?
    2) Were you aware that there was a HTTYD fandom?
    3) ^If so, was there any kind of consideration for the fandom (research of, suggestions for the game from, etc.)?

    ReplyDelete
  147. I think you can trust almost all of us ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  148. Ok, I've got one:

    1) How many hours of gameplay do the makers estimate that this will provide. I know that is tricky to pin down because different people play faster or become bored quicker, but how much is there to unlock/do/win in this game?

I know this has nothing to do with the article, but I wanted to do something silly.

  152. Will this actually be on the Wii? Or is it only going to be on the stupid Wii U?

    ReplyDelete
  153. Both, and the Wii U is actually a decent system.

  154. Ok. Sorry, but all the games that I'd like to play are on the Wii U only, and I don't want to buy another system just to play them.

  155. Yes, it's a shame, but that's just how technology works... Whether it's really all that nice or not. At least they are making both a Wii and a Wii U version. But, yeah, most other games are just not going to come out for the Wii any more. I guess it's great for you that this one is!

  156. Will this game have anything to offer for older, more experienced gamers or was it designed with a younger audience squarely in mind?

    ReplyDelete
  157. Yeah, at least this one is on the Wii. But I don't think I'll ever be able to play the second Donkey Kong game. :(

  158. I don't have to worry about the dot thingy anymore?

  159. Will your dragon be able to walk around with you? Can you go off and explore places?

    ReplyDelete
  160. Well, Hiccup has a flaming sword that looks like a lightsaber, so I do.
Which brings the question, will we get to use the flaming sword in this game?

  161. can you get a yak farm in this game

    ReplyDelete
  162. Where can we get this? Is it worldwide? Because I live in Malaysia and I can't even find HTTYD toys here... Sad...

  163. I've got another question. Can we pleeeaaase train changewings in the game?

    ReplyDelete
  164. How do you do to quote?

  165. If not to play the games you like, what other reason is there to buy a console?

  166. Will it have bewilder beast in the game?

    ReplyDelete
  167. My questions:
    1. Will we be able to fly around Berk or explore other places?
    2. Will this be a focused on training dragons or fighting with them?
    3. will the game follow the second movie?
    4. Will the graphics be any better?

    ReplyDelete
  168. I'm really curious as to why this game won't be coming to PC or next-gen console
Also, is the game story-based, or will it be a free-roam RPG-styled game?
I'm not sure if the game developers have the funds but imagine the game Skyrim-styled (except all the bloody stuff so younger kids can play)

  169. How extensive will the level design be compared to the first game? Like, will we be reduced to the miniature Berk that was in the first game? Or have a larger, much more bigger level or multiple levels involving Berk, or perhaps other locations? This is in terms of the side-quests, exploring, and the hunting and gathering of food and miscellaneous items to keep your dragon healthy, if that element will be retained from the previous title. Appreciate any feedback.
