Later Release Date for Dragons 3

We've heard rumors about this for a while, but now it's finally official: the release date for How to Train Your Dragon 3 has been pushed back one year, from June 17, 2016 to June 9, 2017.

There is some speculation that Finding Dory's June 17 release may have been the reason. It's possible that this influenced DreamWorks' decision. However, the date change appears to mostly be because Dragons 3 is a bit behind schedule. As of Dragons 2, neither the story nor voice work was complete, as was planned.

Ending a trilogy is hard, so this makes sense. It just means that when the film comes out three years from now, we can expect something pretty amazing.

Thanks Molly and janinka11!

  1. Well that is a bummer, I would have liked the film to be sooner, but as it was with dragons 2, it gives plenty of time to make the end as good as it could be! by the way, First ;P

  3. Overall, this is probably good news. A later release date means more time to work on getting it right. Of course, it's not a foolproof idea (there have certainly been movies that would have benefited from a bit less rewriting, at the very least), but it generally works.

  4. I believe Hiccup said it best when he said:
"OW! Why would you DO that?!"

    ReplyDelete
  5. I hope that's the case. Perhaps they need time to rethink the sequels after all this talk of a fourth when Dragons has been promoted as a trilogy for so long.

  6. Nooooooooooooooooo~! DX Must they torture us more with all this waiting?

  7. That picture of toothless says it all ;(
But its for the best...I want httyd3 to be utter perfection. So more time=more auesomness.

  8. I think there might be a cliffhanger in the third movie so let them take there time They said DreamWorks would split it into two parts that's a great idea. They got there $600 mil. And we need a How to train your dragon 4. I am mad about this but Also looking forward to DreamWorks movies in 2014,2015 and Finding Dory, The nut job 2

  9. I'm actually relieved that this happened. Thinking of the development time for HTTYD 2 (around 3-4 years depending on whether the project was set in motion), and comparing to the supposed time of HTTYD 3 (2-3) years, it would have lacked the 'polish' that HTTYD 2 had. Despite some questionable plot points in the 2nd movie, it undoubtedly had great visuals. Whether this is solely due to the new apollo software is debatable, but extra time will do nothing but help the movie at this point.

After all, it's the final movie that will leave the lasting taste in our mouths. And I would personally wait an extra year for a great ending to a great trilogy, than have a marginally acceptable movie to superficially enjoy.

The soundtrack will be better as well. Now you could say that HTTYD 1 was so great despite having such a short development time; but in most cases extra time will serve a large benefit, seeing that they will need to carefully choose how to (hopefully) end this story.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Nooooooooooooo that means it wont come out until I am in college.
Well as long as they end it well I can not complain.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Side thought, the new release date may have something to do with the delay of the last book. Cressida Crowell last I heard was going through several surgeries and had barely started book 12, so maybe that is what caused this delay. thoughts?

  12. A forth movie?

    ReplyDelete
  13. hopefully this means we will get another season of dragons to hold the fans over another year.

    ReplyDelete
  14. NOOOOOOO! Now I have to wait 1 more year D: On the other note, it may be good because HTTYD 3 will be more developed and better :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think this is actually good news. I don't want to see DW rush the third movie, so this sounds very good. I can wait. :) Take your time, Dreamworks. I'm sure that the movie will be amazing!

  16. i died a little when i heard this.

  17. I never really truly believed it was going to make the original date. Even a year ago, when it had the date all to itself, I didn't believe it was possible. HTTYD1 was turned around in less time, but the designs and most of the CG assets were all done. Even with that, it took both Chris and Dean to pull that off, and Dean is working alone now. In an interview before HTTYD2 came out, he said "You can't take these dates too seriously."

Now knowing that much of the Drago arc in HTTYD2 was originally meant for HTTYD3, Dean has to rework the story. I'd rather wait longer for a better movie. As long as I know Dean and co. are still making it, I'm fine.

"Finding Dory" is a real in-the-works movie?!! I mean, I've seen fan-made teasers about it, and even a Wikipedia page, but dear Shampo of the gods! this is real? Anything goes and this actually went?
By the way the Shampo is a mystical forged object from a Nordic rune-songs turned Finnish epic legend that was said to be able to make anything, including gold, food and thread, and it would never stop even if it consumed the small, barely habitable island it supplies in the legend.
So I suppose no Pixar's in for 2017, but I do know The Incredibles 2 is in preproduction for at least 2018. Grew up with Pixar, teenaged with Dragons!

    ReplyDelete
  22. This is better. In 2016, there are quite a lot of animated films that are planned to be released. So less competition, less chance of a low grossing.
I can't bear to see DreamWorks Animation to be shut down.

I would have been finishing my first year of film college by the first release date. Oh well, more time for the internship I guess. And we still get to say we grew through our coming-of-age with this, and I think when the movie meets the books in the very end, it will exemplify that perfectly. Yes I know it's spoiler, but it is marking itself to me as the experience of change I've been waiting to see, so I know even through guessing what the visuals will be that it's an experience that I should most definitely not miss out on! And maybe then I'll FINALLY see a 3d screening! I'm sorry, but it just doesn't seem they'd be likely to rerelease films in the theater anymore, and I am anywhere but near the premiere cities for double/ triple screenings. Oh Shrek, Spirit and Prince of Egypt, come back to the theater and meet your cult followings and a new generation. I know everyone is facing forbidden-ness thanks to reruns and home media release, but there's an experience with covering the entire breadth of vision that I discovered through Frozen and HTTYD2 that may not be matched on the small screen, and immersion is roughly half of it. The other half is the nostalgia or the experience of sharing the experience with a new audience. If home media doesn't kill the concept of rereleases, I am totally for rereleases of films from our childhood, so please make it happen, DreamWorks!

Wait-wait! I think I might figure this out. It's the "Toothless Lost" sequence where Toothless falls in the ice after Hiccup is kidnapped by Valka. It's just that the expression on toothless felt different, kind of like the shot from test drive that was promoted with altered facial expressions (the one currently used for the latest DVD edition of HTTYD).
"My fault!" [SPANK] "Yeah, yeah. I'm on it. Position 3- no. 4!"

Everyone was supporting the same movie and on the same page, which helped to make the 14 months (minus early production design) work wonderfully without being killed off by executives with a limited focus group in mind. Rather, they, including Cressida Cowell and Jeffrey Katzenberg, supported the directors to create a film that appealed to everyone. Also, John Powell is taking a hiatus (undetermined-length break) until he scores HTTYD3

    ReplyDelete
  31. Man...

Well, that sort of stinks... but... I suppose when you think about it, when this movie comes out (as far as we know) Hiccup and Toothless's story will be over. This extra year, though it will be kind of a pain to wait through, will also be another year where we can speculate and spazz about our heroes. Sure, it means a much longer wait than we would like, but why rush it? As Icelandiceel said, it will be hard to finish up a trilogy, AND if we are going to wait three years... I think we can trust that it will be worth it (I know the second one was).

    Still... kinda a bummer.

Yeah, but bear in mind that 2014 also has a lot of animation going out. A record twelve! And though Spring and January tend to be lackluster, this also seems to be the 1994 of my generation. Is I was two years older and could afford to go to more than four movie a year, this would have been the greatest movie year of my time! So I think HTTYD# would have an advantage, still, if there's a lot of competition this year. As long as Michael Bay isn't releasing a Transformers that year. Now, of course, the slow performance at the initial box office for HTTYD2 startled me, but there is such a hype across other parts of the world that stood boiling hot and waiting till they finally saw the first screening in their countries open. And the box office boomed with a nuance that simply would not exist had the release been international immediately. It didn't "stun me" stun me, since I'm American and the books and author are much better known in Brittan. Still, I'm sure the HTTYD3 movie would have superb box office performance domestically if they finally avoid R-rated comedy release dates.

I can't wait to hear what John Powell comes up with during the extra time. Plus why are we rushing this? When the third movie ends, that's it! We may get another short but then what? 73. All right, time to change the countdowns. I'd rather they make a good film than rush it. Keeping away from Finding Dory is a good idea too.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I have found out that it is easier for me to pass the time until HTTYD 3 by getting excited for other animated films such as Big Hero 6, Kung Fu Panda 3, and Finding Dory. I make a list of countdowns for all these different movies which then leads up to the final movie countdown which will be HTTYD 3. Just a way I have been able to pass the waiting time a little better

  78. Ziggerastica's KalevalaSeptember 4, 2014 at 10:16 PM

Yeah, there's a long list of animated movies this year (12's gotta be the record!). And Pixar's been hoping to do more films per year (Newt and Monster's University were supposed to be released the same year until the former was cancelled thanks to Rio). And Disney is working on a Polynesian tale for 2018 so the end is still out and away! It's just that if there wasn't a reliance on sequel madness, this year could have been the 1994 of my childhood (a.k.a. the greatest year at the movies). Also with the live-action (some of them). Unfortunately, I can't afford to be a big moviegoer, and they killed off rental stores for membership credit card based blood boxes and online businesses called Netflix. No wonder I can't see new films! There wasn't much to see in the 2000s, but now there's a record amount of films I want to see and I can't do it! I'll keep animation at my top priority for the wait. Your list of upcoming films makes me hope there'll be more movies to look forward to and a great decade to see them.

I oughtta start looking for stills with all these facial expressions. They're so abound throughout the HTTYD franchise, and what fans have interpreted from the expressions is a phenomenal list! It'll be my new hunt for A113! Now if I can just find the A113 room at the Monster's Inc facility (even the director forgot which hallway it was in). Of course, the difference between Pixar and DreamWorks is that DreamWorks doesn't have a specific, consistent House Style, enabling numerous takes and risks on what kind of movie they can make, but because of this, we can't say they all blend together in the same universe, so I'm glad the DreamWorks theory isn't there. Oh, and the Disney-Katzenberg rivalry.

I'm thinking about doing a game with the idea! insert crime and insert (?) and create a 15-second video of it! But I can't edit DVD material (copyright; my laptop has no DVD drive, but I'd prefer to use my own clips If I could expand the file space as opposed to moving it. If I move a video to my terabyte storage, it will delete itself from my Windows Live Movie Maker.) Still, I'd like to see what other fans would do with this gag.

  100. Ziggerastica's KalevalaSeptember 6, 2014 at 1:18 PM

Well... I don't know how to react to that, unless of course the Avatar sequel(s) was coming out in 2015-2016. At least I get more time to get used to college life. I'm supposed to be in year 2 by then if I enter. Still a year under the wait for Dragons 2, and hopefully not all the episodes are released at once. We need that show to lean on as our inching path up to Dragons 3. Then again, I'll have to say that the franchise will still mark my own coming of age, and it's always a pleasure to see that moment expanded. This gives me another year for that. Still, now I feel slightly more guilty every time I mention an upcoming film that's only in development. I guess Dean's vision is getting more complex over this time, or they figured more time for editing would help, or because John Powell is taking a hiatus until the next Dragons (3). Either way, it's complicated for everyone.
Note: This was on the previous post, but I just thought it fits better on this post. Thanks Desbiens for giving insight about the subject a day early.

    WHY?!

I'd still be in my teenage years when it comes out. HOLY CRUD, WHISPER! You'll be an adult! You'll go to uni!

AND I'LL BE HERE ROTTING AWAY IN MY CHILDHOOD. :(

I'd still be in my teen years, while you're out there as an adult being adulty, while I continue to be a kid with no life. 😫

You'll go to uni, while I go to school. >:(

  112. I think that was unavoidable. 2 years aren't enough if you want to make an epic movie which is (at least) good like the previous two. Probabily we will have both season 3 and 4 of the series before the third movie is released.

    ReplyDelete
  113. My heart stopped a bit when I heard this but in the long run I think it will turn out for the best. HTTYD 3 would have been a college graduation present but I'll be happy if it's a bit belated. Go DreamWorks! Go and make an epic conclusion for Hiccup and the gang. I'll be holding my breath until then.

  114. haha, that's sounds like an awesome game. It sounds like it would really catch on too.

  115. Actually now that I think about it, this is a really good thing, other then making a beter movie it means that dragons won't come to its end for another3 years insted of 2. :)

So you think it might call for a little fan challenge? Cause if I can't do that, I'm also planning to see if I can capture the reaction to Valka's introduction through the expressions of someone whose never been exposed to the spoiler inducing trailers. I mean, if you didn't know that was Hiccup's mother, how do you react to the image of a tusked caped stature coming through the clouds and stalking our hero right after he says he's after the Ghengis Khan/Hannibal of his world? It's just too surreal! So I tried to keep my parents away from the trailers, which was disgustingly simple because there was hardly and commercial or merchandise in my area for it other than McDonald's on Cartoon Network. But about the "insert for Astrid's phrase" game, how much do you think it will catch on to warrant a challenge, 'cause I sure would like to do it if I could.

  118. Ziggerastica's KalevalaSeptember 8, 2014 at 5:13 PM

I know the current ending, but I will only say it on an secret analysis I currently titled "The Upcoming Spoiler: HTTYD," but there's a lot of delays now. I can't project my voice loud enough for my crummy webcam without getting the attention of footsteps behind my door over whether or not I'm talking to someone through a window or something. Plus the airplanes. So yeah, a lot of delays kept me from finishing it before the petition to change the ending becomes official (now 50 signatures away from winning- and now I almost made a Slumdog Millionaire reference). I won't tell YOU the ending, but I fully support InHonoredGlory's protest to not change the ending. And no, knowing the ending will do nothing to ruin my experience, for there's still questions I have about the rest of the film that need to be experienced. But I do know why non-3rd-act spoilers ruin an experience: It's because we tend to map out how each scene should go based on the clips and have to readjust ourselves when the actual film doesn't follow our mapped-out plan. That's why the pacing of the second movie was very mixed to me at first and second. Third, I'll have to wait and see.

Who wants to see a film about Valka's vigilance from her date with Stoic (and Gobber intervenes them for the first time) to her reunion with Hiccup? I'd sign a petition for it, and it's on Dean DeBlois' dream projects list if he doesn't transfer to other mediums of filmmaking immediately after HTTYD. There has to be a call to start that petition for DreamWorks to say "Hey Dean, make this Valka special for the trilogy edition box set!"

I'm an exception (I'm 16 and have no app phone, though I'd probably like the Android seeing how all the HTTYD apps seem to go to it), so the fact that you have an account still startles me a bit, but not as much. Just as long as you don't brag about having the latest app phone, I'm good.

What new Dragon from the TV series and HTTYD2 would you want to ride. Choose up to 2. It cannot be a dragon from the first film. I'd go for Gruff the Hobblegrunt (land) and the Typhoomerang (air)!

It's actually pretty dangerous if you're going to do it for a long while, you'll end up either unable to turn, or you have too high speed so you damage you parachute, or yourself if your parachute survives it, I have done it for a small while, but not as far as Hiccup does it ^-^

It might be the slow connection, but my bars disagree. But I do still have to get an IMG converter and buy the full version of Wondershare before I can post anything HTTYD from my camera. Besides, I did say I'd upload a few screenshots of HTTYD bonus...perhaps I could come up with something with them.

  144. Ziggerastica's KalevalaSeptember 10, 2014 at 3:32 PM

I think maybe it was because of how it was not in the forefront of the quick shot and the story, so they make it quick and subtle. But now that you've mentioned it, I can just vaguely remember that. Eret has definitely come full circle, and I can't wait to see him with skullcrusher again!
P.S. At my first viewing, I thought Hiccup put him in charge of all the Scuttleclaws! "There's no dragon Eret, Son of Eret cannot wrangle- [grunt]!" to "I'd be honored."

    ReplyDelete
  145. no, but because I don't know how high the fall was I can't quite tell.
I jump from 4~5000 meters up in the air, you can free fall for about 2000 meters, then it starts to become hard to steer and all that, 2000 meters in free falling is about 30 seconds of falling, and because they are just above the clouds id' say they're 3000 meters up, so for about 10-20 seconds would be a good estimation.
The absolute longest freefall I dared was 900 meters, then I did the balanced fall, the most basic one.
The normal usage for freefall is when you're above your group and want to reach them, so you don't do it for long because of how much it makes you accelerate, normally you fall 200 km/h, but you can get up to 290~300 km/h when you freefall, which makes a really big difference!
But freefall is actually funnier then staying balanced :-)
some bad news for me now though... I won't be able to use the clubs skydiving-gear next year, since we get to use them for 2 years after the course, then we need to buy our own... which is expansive :-(
    80000 sek (7000£ | 13000$ | 8000€) for whole equipment.
I will need quite a sum of money to get it, and since I'm still going to school... that's pretty freaking hard D:

  148. Ziggerastica's KalevalaSeptember 10, 2014 at 9:30 PM

It sure is. In the Western Hemisphere, I have yet to find a place that sells that kind of stuff (flying is expensive, and it's required to do this). I'm an acrophobic, but I'd probably enjoy falling. Obstacles of death at the bottom are the real scary parts until you've reached an elevation where the ground looks flat as a living drawing. I went to Empire State Building, and above the fog, I was surprised how little the idea of falling had on me, as if I wasn't in danger until I climb the antenna. Of course, they can't let anyone try that, not even a stand-in for King Kong. Still, the freefall and flightsuit routine is something I've been wanting to try, but the only thing I can find is an indoor skydiving place for $200 per 10 seconds or so. It's either that or paragliding while tethered to a boat. Still in school.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Just so you know, if you're going to skydive you won't get to do it alone, you will be attached to a person and you won't get to do much, it's still fun, but not as fun as doing it alone (it's a security thing they have worldwide) but if you do the same as I did, taking an AFF course you will get to skydive 20+ times (depends on where you live) and you pay about 4000$ for it.
first one you're attached to a trainer, but after that one, you get to do everything alone, if you are interested I would defenitely say that you find a city close to yours which have skydiving.
I have to go 217km with car to reach the club.
If you're just going to try the parajump (attached with someone) then it'll cost about 500$, I need to go to school now, so I hope that I helped a little :D

There's an official shirt design contest, so there might be a way to expand the game ideas that way, but first I might have to start a blog or send the idea to UserToothless. So the East Hemisphere is ahead of the West time-wise!
Yeah, the post office can be corrupt. Damaged package being kept away from recipient, perhaps, but then why couldn't they do a refund/ return order with a money-back guarantee? Greed, Corruption, fear of becoming the next parcel mail pigeonhole (in that they can only do slow mail delivery and never send mail on time if at all). Yeah, they ripped you off on that mail shipping. It better be that they only have mail slots reserved for small packages, and they have to be by name as opposed to address. But again, why would they? Unless each house has the same family for every generation? Nah, there shouldn't be an excuse for no-receive unless it was damaged and no money-back guarantee was established, but only if they're legally responsible for the damaged package.

I'm back from camp, and while there, I found a secret pathway that led past an uprooted tree, a broken bridge, and hills. It seemed a perfect setting to recreate "The Downed Dragon sequence except no fog and no uh, "gorged hill that dipped then humped back up"
Hiccup: "Oh, the gods hate me. Some Vikings lose their knife or their mug. No not me. I have to lose AN ENTIRE DRAGON!!!"
Anyway we had a rainstorm, and in the midst of it I've finally named my dragon: Cedarrain the Trough Throbber. Basically, it uses its neck as a pelican sack and digs with its horn. He has a a keen sense for rain, and tends to make a kangaroo-hop during take-off. And his claws are made for wet rock. I'll just post one picture of him for now, in case it takes a while to load.

Oh, yes. It was a merit badge camp, so I had a 3-hour class for 2 badges and have to complete some at home due to time constraints. The puddles were there the whole time, and I kept thinking about "Hoppipola" (by Jonsi's band Sigur Ros). I couldn't hop in them, since I only bought one shoe pair though. I had to share a camp with another troop because me and my companion didn't have a full group. And we enjoyed it, just sitting on this stack of wood under the pavilion. I also followed other groups into these secret shortcuts throughout the camp and came across one that wasn't a shortcut to anywhere in particular, just a great "Downed Dragon" location. The thunderstorm left us in the dining hall for its duration (Scout Summer Camp), and it was there I ran through names for my dragon. Cedarrain= "see da rain". The mild gusts afterward kept me up all night when I got back to the troop campsite (They like the wind, but after seeing my pillow, trees, etc. get blown in the wind and having yet to readjust to non-hot weather thanks to Arizona, I was shuddering my body weight around just to keep warm. It always rains at camp time, but I enjoyed the rest of it.
