Dean DeBlois on HTTYD 2 and Plans for HTTYD 3

Check out this interview with Dean DeBlois on the making of How to Train Your Dragon 2 and his ideas for How to Train Your Dragon 3! He also talks about how changes in the story and roles of Valka and Dragon in Dragons 2 have changed the future of the franchise.

Work on the screenplay for the third film will continue until the end of the year. And, unfortunately, he again confirms that the third film will tell a story of why dragons no longer exist. But perhaps we can still expect dragon-related spin-offs in the future!

Thanks, DragonBassist!

To bad there wont be a httyd 4.
    But spinoffs are possible.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Agreed! But, at least they're able to complete what they originally planned without money having the final word. If there are spinoffs, I'll require 1x Hiccup and 1x Toothless. These are my demands Dreamworks. :p

  4. I'll have to view this later. I'm glad to see more topics are coming in on this site, though 'm kind of sad because I'll be leaving this site after the first clip and/or trailer releases. I'm staying away from spoilers this time. I might go to the forums, though. [Outcast Island forums]

  5. In httyd 3, do you guys think it's true that Toothless won't be in the
movie or will be dead in the movie because it's based off the books,
well most of it at least? Because in the first book, I believe which I
have not read in awhile it said something like, Hiccup narrating it btw,
"I remember a time when there were dragons..." so if Toothless won't be
in the movie because he is dead by then and same with all the other
dragons, I know sad to say, that would be a reason for me to not want it
to come so soon and they little time to work on it too. I think they
should take more time to work on it then just 2 years to work on it. My
friend told me this stuff and I agree with her. IDK, what do you all
    think about that?

    ReplyDelete
  6. I'm doing the same when it does come around and nice to talk to you again!

  7. You're not on Tumblr, aren't you? Because that sentence is pretty sensitive there and everyone has been talking about it (and this interview + HTTYD 3 overall) many months now. There are a lots of speculations and theories about HTTYD 3, you should check them out! There are many good points and interesting things. (And a lot of dragon nip. Let's not forget the nip.)

If it's a spinoff, I want Toothless and Hiccup to be reborn as Guardians along with Astrid, Stormfly etc.

  9. Nah I dont think he dies, in the book it said they crawled back into the sea never to return or something like that. Plus the line "There were dragons when I was a boy" will probably be said at the end.

    ReplyDelete
  10. oh ok, well also apparently Hiccup's an old guy in the books too and he's like writing his stories since it's Hiccup's memoirs so Toothless wasn't really there with him as he wrote them so I'm afraid they might actually exclude toothless and all the dragons out of the movie to follow the book but I still kind of wish, they'd wait a little longer to release HTTYD 3 in since they only have 2 years to make it.

    ReplyDelete
  11. i wish that they will change their mind after or before this movie is in theaters. i dont want dragons to be gone at the end or through the movie. i want their to be dragons start to end for their finale movie. T_T

    ReplyDelete
  12. I believe Dean Deblois should of changed his mind back to HTTYD4. Because he makes to many choices I want is HTTYD3 & HTTYD4. But of course there not going to make the fourth movie. After the third movie probably there will be a HTTTD4. But spin-offs. Instead. :(

    ReplyDelete
  13. love what Dean said about Drago. ive seen some criticism over Drago as a villain because of the lack of depth and background so its nice to see that Dean is aware of it and stated that he WANTED more depth, but simply didnt have the screen time for it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. You'll have to wait until Cowell releases the 12th and final book to see what happens to the dragons in the end. While the movie will share this ending, how it happens will likely be different :)
I swear, I will be bawling my eyes out in the cinema when I watch the third movie :o

  15. HTTYD was the best DreamWorks movie series ever♡

Shrek was also the best movie series♡

  16. Well, the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. Unfortunately, it's not the only one, and given that DeBlois seems to think that Valka is actually a good character, I won't be getting my hopes up on Drago becoming any more than a random evil guy to fight.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh god guys. So you know HTTYD 3 was moved to 2017, mainly because of Finding Dory right? Well there's going to be a Toy Story 4, and surprise surprise. Its gonna be released in June 2017, exact same month HTTYD 3 will be released. DreamWorks could be in trouble because of that, we all know Toy Story will make more money than Dragons...

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hi :* how are you ??<3

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm glad Dean admits that Drago was a little bit stiff, as I found that to be one of the few noticeable flaws of the 2nd film. Not sure I agree with his decision to dumb down the Valka sympathetic villain angle for kids, as that would've made the conflict even more compelling, but I do wonder if he got pressure from Katzenberg and Dreamworks to do so and just didn't admit it. That sort of smells like a studio interference type of thing to me.

As for the 3rd movie, I'm intrigued to see if he goes through with a bittersweet ending instead of the Disney-esque "happily ever after" ending. I hope he does. That'll give it more power in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  20. so drago was always meant to be the villain in the final film thats good so hiccup has a challenge plus we get more drago backstory

    ReplyDelete
  21. There's sense in that. I would like to see the post HTTYD 2 events, when Hiccup had time to take all the events in. For example, when he remembers his lonely, childhood and teenage year, wouldn't he be bound to think / say / yell, "and where were you all this time ?!!"

    ReplyDelete
  22. Got my blue-ray copy yestersay, I was sooo excited !!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. DeBlois himself acknowledges that leaving Drago's character development to the third film left him a bland character, so why would Valka be different.

Also, no, people don't work that way. There's no way any human being is going to react to being kidnapped by the woman who abandoned them with anything even approaching a positive attitude.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Dean never wanted a fourth movie, it was Katzenberg's idea from the start. Dean being a Star Wars nerd wanted the HTTYD franchise to stay a trilogy in order to keep it traditional and what not

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm awaiting HTTYD 3 with a pure childish glee coupled with a morbid curiosity of the events to come. My stomach's in knots of excitement and apprehension just reading/thinking about it!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeah, lately Katzenberg has been making a few choices that aren't so.... savory. Namely the leaked rumors of DreamWorks selling to that Japanese company doesn't help his image either. Even John Lasseter is starting to drag down a bit. :\

    ReplyDelete
  46. Well I'm out if DreamWorks really doesn't make that many movies I guess I'll go for a Trillogy if the movie is long. But sad for it to end. There doing spin-offs to get money.

    ReplyDelete
  47. They change there mind to much they. bring out to many spoilers I am so shocked. If HTTYD3 comes out sad and intense it's basically. DreamWorks. Who makes Dragons not exist.or not. :(

    ReplyDelete
  48. Well does anyone know why dragons are gone in the books because maybe that'll sorta tell us what happens to them.

    ReplyDelete
  49. It would be great to know more about Valka's inner struggles. No doubt that such an isolated life and the guilt of that choice must take its toll somehow.
As for Hiccup's reaction, it's ok for me... so far. The shock of getting back the mother he thought he would never meet could explain it. But Hiccup's feelings are bound to be a horrible mess once all these events are behind him.

    ReplyDelete
  50. You know, I might be willing to believe that Hiccup's just too overjoyed at finally meeting his mother (mostly out of a desire for this movie to be good), if it wasn't for the slight fact that she kidnapped him. He should be starting from a negative opinion of her, even before stopping to think about what she actually did.

Additionally, even if we assume for the sake of argument that a significantly delayed negative reaction makes sense (it doesn't, of course), then it's still terrible writing, since it robs the Hiccup/Valka relationship (and, on similar principles, the Stoick/Valka relationship) of anything remotely interesting.

And frankly, now I don't care about Valka's "inner struggles" or whatever bovine excrement DeBlois comes up with to make her seem deep while never allowing any of the other characters to act as if she's anything less than a goddess descended from Asgard. I just want to see her squished by Drago's Bewilderbeast and left a paste on the floor, for making the second act a bigger chore to sit through than any second act in movie history.

    ReplyDelete
  51. You know, methinks that's less Pixar's decision and more Disney's. Terrible either way, with release date being the least of the problems, but at least assign most of the blame to where it deserves to be.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Agree with u!, in fact i thought Dean was already following the disney line cause Dean put lyrics in the middle of the film...and that is the Disney style (I just hate it)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Disney is one of the most powerful entertainment companies in the world. When they tell you to throw your credibility, you ask "Off what cliff?"

Now, Toy Story 4 will undoubtedly have problems, and it will be fair to blame those on Pixar (at least in the absence of evidence pointing the other way), but the fact that the movie exists is all Disney's fault, and its release date is mostly Disney's fault as well. If Pixar need more time to make the movie, Disney might oblige (they did for The Good Dinosaur), but otherwise, the release date is out of Pixar's hands.

And honestly, there was always going to be a Pixar movie released around that time. I certainly can't blame Disney for putting one of their top franchises in against the biggest franchise of their biggest rival, given that the movie does exist.

The fact that Toy Story 4 exists is, of course, unforgivable, but that's Disney's fault, not Pixar's.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yeah, but they didn't have one this year.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Which is exactly why they would really want to avoid delaying a film again for a while. Even Pixar only has so much goodwill.

And even if we assume that they have control over which films they release in which year, there's simply no way that Pixar would control which month their film was released, let alone which week.

And again, it's rather hard to fault Disney for their choice of release date. They can either face an almost certain loss to Dreamworks at the summer box office, or they can unleash the biggest gun in their arsenal that they'll have available. It's not personal, it's just business. Whether or not it's a good business decision remains to be seen.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Sure, Hiccup doesn't give a second thought about the kidnapping, but in a way, she didn't harm him (just scared him a little, especially about Toothless), and she had her dragons take the nightfury back. And when Hiccup arrives in her lair, before she takes off her mask, he quickly has to set his mind on something else : his own survival, because he doesn't know, at first, how those dragons would react, and at this very moment, he knows he might as well be a snack for dragons.
Then Valka says his name, and reveals who she is. She acts awkardly wth him (in her haste to show him her place, or maybe to avoid further face-to-face contact, she runs away), and so on.
All this happens so fast. Even when things slow down a little, Hiccup is still more concerned about the threat that is Drago than his own welfare and feelings. That is so in character. Whether he admits it or not, he has this selfess heart of a chief, and the strong will to make dragons and humans live together.

    ReplyDelete
  57. None of this explains why he he wouldn't object to being kidnapped, or at least ask why he kidnapped him (heck, we never get an explanation on that). The lack of actual harm doesn't justify the kidnapping. All of those other issues kind of fade into insignificance next to that elephant in the room. Indeed, if he's worried about being eaten, then his very first question should be "Why did you kidnap me?" since that's the thing he needs to know if he's to convince them not to harm him. Once he knows he's safe... actually, scratch that. He doesn't know he's safe until Stoick gets there. Hiccup has no memory of Valka, and she provides no evidence that her claims of being his mother are true. As far as I can figure out, any random woman could have walked up to Hiccup, claimed to be his mother, and he would have believed them. And yet it never occurs to him to question any of this?

And if he feels certain that Valka is his mother because of authorial bovine excrement, then how does that make the kidnapping less of an issue? If anything, it makes it more of an issue. And it's not like Hiccup's concerned first and foremost about dealing with Drago. He wastes Thor only knows how much time flying around with Valka, and never once so much as mentions that slight fact that the only reason they're able to do that is because she kidnapped him for no good reason.

And that's not even getting into the fact that Toothless could easily have died if too much water had gotten into his lungs. But apparently nearly killing his best friend isn't enough to get Hiccup outraged. Sheesh, some friend he is.

    ReplyDelete
  58. About Toothless, I would say the same thing, he's both so relieved he's back safe and sound on the one hand, and on the other, they're still in trouble since they don"t know what the kidnapper wants. I'll agree with the fact that this kidnapping was a violent act (they're vikings...), and that it's difficult to justify it (even my 6-year-old finds it weird, since she logically would'nt harm another dragon rider !). I can't say why it stills cannot bother me that much... maybe because Hiccup goes through a rollercoaster of emotions (must he be tired after all this !), and life is supposed to be tough in this viking world... dunno really...

And speaking of cove, there's something I really want to see. Mmmm two things. I want to see Hiccup lock Bork's notes in a chest and toss it into the ocean where Cressida Cowell would find it centuries later, almost buried in the sediment of the Inner Hebrides like the book website fantasized. The other thing I've wanted to see is the children's reaction to Hiccup. He lived to see and be with Toothless. You ever wonder what it's like to hear of something that you never saw from someone who saw it first-hand? I've always wanted to see what it's like to witness something that future generations would disregard as traceless fantasy. How does one in a newly mediocre world react when Hiccup says the first line of Cressida's book? And knowing that he was a very close friend to one makes it an even more tragic one, and Hiccup has to live on with that in his memoirs.

I keep feeling that lento section of "Ready the Ships" (basically the slow drum-free version of "New Tail") when I think of that last line Hiccup will say. We want more of Toothless, but we also want more Night Furies and why they've been so foreboding. Hiccup has questions for the Night Fury that otherwise could never be answered. I also have a little bit of worry that it may make the first film seem all in vain, but they've grown so much and neither in the relationship feels like a throwaway character at this point, so I can't say this will be a wasted part of a boy's life that happened to take place during his coming of age. The emotion will still be intact and he will remember Toothless as the first and most important friend he had. And I'm already confident that it will be done better than, say, Rio 2, which took the "endangered" plot of the first movie and dumped it in a pouch of retconing plotholes. (now the point of needing to give the first movie, a tourist show, a story at all was?). But at the same time, time is in the wake, because the books had a thousand-year alliance with dragons and Vikings while the movies probably won't include ten. {/;<'(]

  72. We can only hope there is one happy resolve when the curtain falls

    ReplyDelete
  73. Since he doesn't know what the kidnapper wants, asking should be the first thing on his mind, especially since Hiccup's the type of guy to think it's all a big misunderstanding (which it may or may not have been - we don't know because it never comes up again).

And while vikings are violent, the good guys at least are never supposed to be violent without reason. That's more the villains domain, yet everyone gets pissed off at Drago having insufficient reasoning for his actions, yet seem happy to overlook a kidnapping by a supposedly good person that is ever explained.

(sigh), What I'm saying is how will those who live later on without dragons, over a millennium, treat the concept of dragons. As a fantasy. But for Hiccup, Astrid, and all the Berkians we know so far, they were alive. Real. And perhaps millennia later, a certain piece of a creature with fireproof scales and retractable teeth, and wings that could hold a man or two airborne in its prime might appear under the dirt of an island unknown to Berk. And perhaps even, they may be in a sleep-coma, waiting for millennia to pass before returning to the world from the dark oceans that once marooned Berk. The sky will be full again.
I think the point of "How to Find Your Dragon" (hosted by an explorer named Zeke) was to represent how we as a world without dragons view and conceive dragons. "Do dragons really exist? Yes: in every culture, in every time in history... and in every child's heart."

I think the petition is over. They have enough signatures. But there's an aspect of the planned ending that I really want to experience, and I trust DeBlois that he can write it in a way that's not absolutely tragic. He's trying to live up to the mystery and ambition of the elderly Hiccup that bookends the Cressida Cowell stories. You've heard of the ending, right? The key line is one that teared me for a whole weekend (The ultimate test of a Dragons fan, by the way), but for some reason, I didn't want it to leave my head. I tend to get a bit...pensive about these things, always thinking intra-personally and passionately overthinking how I as an audience member and fan take in what I'm shown or given. As for "why" questions, that's a different story.

  92. The key difference is that Stoick is called out on his actions, and Valka isn't. Valka is more like Bella Swan, in that she's a horrible person, but is never presented as such. That's not complex characterisation; that's just atrocious writing.

What I'm saying is perhaps there's a reason I could not sign it at will.
Um, is there a no-showing-face rule on this site, because there is one thing I do have. It's part of my unaired thesis about how the ending of HTTYD 3 may go down. The particular part won't spoil the actual ending like the rest of the video, but it does contain a bit of me trying to make the decision. (wind-ing the tune from "New Tail" because I can't whistle)
I understand the complaints about "book differences" and defeating the purpose of Forbidden Friendship, but the more this dwelled in my head, the more I thought. And I tried to rant about it on my webcam. The webcam has terrible lighting and audio, and the video in its entirety would currently stand at about 2 hours (too long!) But the part I'm thinking of uploading is only half a minute. I have notes on similarities between the films and books, but I might redo them for time. And while I won't upload the whole thing here on account of spoilers, I'm still not sure if it's acceptable to upload a video that contains no Dragons-related content or cast and crew related content.

Ah, YOUR point. I haven't missed it. It's just that I second guess everything. I didn't have an account by which to sign the petition at the time, but I kept thinking.
    (SPOILERS FOLLOW)
I know and agree that separation for character growth is a heavy trope but a clichéd one. But underneath, there's this aspect. It's about a boy saying goodbye to the world he and the adults grew up in. And there's the underlying notion of probable extinction. I've always wondered what it would have been like to meet the last dodo and witness its end, but because the characters have a symbiotic relationship, this takes it up a few levels. I see it as us leaving the characters with a what-if notion and I trust Dean with making sure that what-if goes toward the end emotion we want. I know I sound like a hypocrite saying this as a fan, but in the midst of the elderly Hiccup's memoirs, there's the underlying hope that the dragons will return, and the future world must understand them. Which is why I commented on including Bork's notes in the scene to settle loose ends. I do want to feel when I watch the third installment of a trilogy, and while the lead-in sounds a bit too early, I know that Hiccup and Toothless will always be best buds, and separation won't change that. Rather, there's an earnesty to how Berk will approach this future. I've made a half-bold decision to upload my video segment, and if the authorities assert me to remove it, I'll abide. Crossing fingers. I'm not sure if it'll work, though. If it doesn't, what file type do I have to convert to for a live-action video? I'm just getting image files and html. I'll come back with it.

  101. I just read on Rotoscopers that Hasbro is interested in buying DreamWorks. XP Anything involved with the Transformers films is doomed I tell you, DOOMED!

(Aside from MLP of course a full-length feature film from those guys will be a long, long time)

Are you sure it's not just a shareholding they're doing? I thought 20th Century Fox bought all of domestic DreamWorks.

I wish I could say I'm relieved that Toon Disney wasn't making more direct-to-video sequels, and Circle 7 (originally bent to make sequels to Pixar movies after the 2006 acquisition) never got a movie of the ground. But then they released Planes. In THEATERS! Aside from how low-budget it looks from its editing, the blandness of the characters, and the deus ex machine that ruins the message of the movie (if you bother let it matter), we now have to spend the next four years struggling to say to neighbors that Planes was in fact NOT a Pixar product. I call it the land-before-time curse, in that the first one was good, but then the sequel rights were given to a home video market power-hungry studio. And because this conveniently happened to mark the time where Don Bluth's films started dropping in quality, everyone was blaming HIM for making the sequels, which he had no part in. Now of course, John Lasseter has to give his rights to Cars to someone else after the critical panning of Cars 2 and the introduction of Mater's Tall Tales, but the decision to allow a theatrical film to be made by their television faction alone kills the quality. And it's when trailers for films like these show up that I cringe into my seat at the theater. Speaking of which, if they're mortal enemies in the business, why do they still promote each other's previews?

  107. Correction : she isn't YET. I still think all the events of HTTYD 2 happened all too fast, and that many things will need to be settled in the future.

  109. Yes, there is no My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic movie. As long as I keep taking these pills, that will continue to be the case.

  110. That logic of "eh, it doesn't matter if a major character has no logical characterisation, they'll just have it in the sequel" is a copout. Even DeBlois seems to agree, he just uses the example of Drago instead of Valka (whether it's because he can't see how poorly written Valka is, or just because he doesn't want to admit to that particular screw-up, I won't venture to guess). Don't get me wrong, better late than never and all that, but it still won't make up for poor characterisation in this movie.

And frankly, if there was a time for Hiccup to call Valka out on her bovine excrement, it was in this movie, when it was all a heck of a lot more relevant. It's not time was an issue - they had three minutes to waste on "For the Dancing and the Dreaming". That's more than enough time to put in something like this:

    Hiccup: Why'd you kidnap me?
Valka: I thought you were working for Drago.

Okay, as I've mentioned before, this explanation doesn't really hold up (though I suppose there's still plenty of extra running time to have Hiccup point out the flaws in Valka's logic), but it's still a darn sight better than the complete lack of an explanation we got in the movie.

Seriously, does DeBlois even know why Valka kidnapped Hiccup? If I ever get the chance to ask DeBlois a question at a convention or some such, you can bet it will be that one. Not because I think there's a good explanation, but just to watch him try to squirm his way out of it.
