DreamWorks Closes PDI, Delays HTTYD 3

On Thursday, DreamWorks announced it was closing its studio in Redwood City, laying off hundreds of its employees and reducing its upcoming films to two per year. As part of DreamWorks' "restructuring," How to Train Your Dragon 3 will yet again be moved a year later to June 29, 2018.

Partly, it seems that this is a result of underperforming films over the past two years. Going to see DreamWorks films is one way you can help. Only one film, Home, is scheduled for 2015, so there's hope that some of these jobs will return once DreamWorks returns to its new plan of two films per year (one original film and one sequel).

However, as DreamWorks is becoming increasingly attached to outsourcing as a way of lowering production costs, it's likely that these are jobs that will never come back. This is sad considering PDI's huge role in the How to Train Your Dragon films as well as in providing the skills and technology for DreamWorks to begin producing CGI animated films, starting with Antz in 1998.

While it's unfortunate that How to Train Your Dragon 3 was delayed yet again, it's even more sad that so many of the amazing people who brought the first two films to life may no longer be working on the third. This is just one more reason to hope that How to Train Your Dragon 2 wins Best Animated Feature Film this year, in addition to the huge number of Annie nominations it has received.

Thanks dragonbassist, God_dragons_love, Julia, and Bubbagump!

  1. This is just speculation, but given that both Dragon movies have netted Dreamworks a healthy profit, what if they bring back the original workers JUST for HTTYD 3? I have no idea would that would imply in terms of labor laws - in other words, I don't know if its legal to bring workers in for just one movie - but if Dreamworks can get away with it, then they should do it. There's no reason the third and final movie of this amazing trilogy should suffer in terms of visual quality just because Dreamworks' other movies couldn't bring home the fish.

I agree. I am much more concerned for the layed-off employees than Dragons 3. My heart goes out to those and hope they find a new job soon! :( <3

  3. It's sad that people lost their jobs, but this is something DreamWorks needed to do, in my opinion. I think it may be a positive thing for HTTYD 3 in the long run.

Can anyone confirm that the laid-off employees actually worked on HTTYD, or is that just speculation? I'd be interested to know more details.

  4. I wonder if there's a chance that Dragons 3 winning the Oscar this spring will convince DWA to switch out Boss Baby and push for a release of one of their better franchises.

  6. Yeah same! Although i'm also sad that HTTYD3 will be pushed back, I know it will be worth the wait, and i'm more sad about the people who no longer have a job and the fact that they will not be involved with HTTYD anymore, i mean they've been working on it since the beginning and now they are no longer able to be apart of it, i hope they are all able to find somewhere else to go. :(

  7. In theory at least, this is good news.

In theory, a longer production time gives more time to make the film the best it can be. In particular, it gives more time for DeBlois to fix any problems with the story, pacing, etc., which is where the second film fell short of the original.

In practice, it doesn't always work out that way (the original film was, from my understanding, remade mostly from the ground up in 12-18 months, but is much more polished in terms of story than the sequel), but those are the exceptions rather than the rule.

So yes, good news is good news, even if it requires a little more patience from us.

  8. Like I said before, I'll probably be living in a retirement home by the time HTTYD 3 is out, but these things happen, right?
I vow to watch every single one of their movies in theatres, as over-rated as they may be.

    DreamWorks:
"Sound the bugle now. Play it just for me. As the seasons change, remember how I used to be...."
"I had a dream, little child of the west wind. Whatever you see that's calling you home, wherever you go..."
"...a flame that still burns. It's to you."
"...so I'll be with you when you dream." - - -
"No scorching sand nor fleeting rain will stop me on my journey"
    "Bursting through the seams."
(To be expanded. What DreamWorks lyric do you want to insert here?)

sniff sobs. I feel so bad though people worked hard to get to were they were....and the fact that the fandom know had to figure out if it's possible to maybe get a few smaller 22 minute shorts as well maybe to answer some questions the audience might have had as to fill in some blanks. though I dote it.

  11. DreamWorks if unofficially doomed! However, we can only hope for a worthy 4 year wait to bring the curtain down on Dragons with style and tears. For now, let us fans of Hiccup & Toothless raise our heads high and be glad for how far we have come so far and what we have far to go.

Can't wait to see it when it's released in theaters though!

  15. The worst part of this is that once again, many people lost their jobs. Despite the fact that we are still living in difficult economic times, we can still hope that they'll find new amazing jobs soon.
I also hope that DreamWorks will be able to get back on its feet. Better times are ahead of us so I remain positive that DreamWorks will grow once again and create more amazing movies! :)

As for HTTYD3, it really sucks to see this movie pushed back to 2018. I feel however that the extra time will be well spend on this movie. After all, many had to wait for four years before they could see HTTYD2 right? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  16. And now a Viking nation will mourn for it's delay. Again. XP Damn DW! I'm finding it really hard to love you guys and want to work with you if you keep firing people and pushing back release dates further and further! Well, at least this means Dean will have even more time to work on the script.

  30. Nope. I'll still have to go to collage but I'll have finished my GCSE's. Collage will take me to 18 years old so I suppose I'll be leaving school properly then but at 16 I'll still be technically leaving school. Eeek!;)

  40. I'm sorry about Dragons being moved back, but at least I know I'll get to see it. I was looking forward to seeing Me and My Shadow, which had already been moved back onces. It sounded more promising to me than Boss Baby.

  41. I'm sure all of us here send there best regards and wishes to all of those who will be let go and to those affected. I'm certain though that they'll find good homes elsewhere considering the great line up of movies they've helped to create. Best of luck to all of them in whatever there future endeavors may be. :)

On HTTYD3 being delayed it sucks sure, but I can't say I'm to upset by the idea. More time to work on the film usually means a better overall film. As others have already said. And very rarely is this ever not true there are some exceptions sure but there not the rule, and considering both the first and second movies were in there on rights good movies I would be confident in saying more time is great and beneficial. Besides I'm certain many of us here (older or younger) have waited much longer on other things to come out. (Cough looking at you KH3 cough.)

    ReplyDelete
  42. And obviously the events of this previous adventure may be the calm before the storm of things to come.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  44. And settle the ending

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yeah, and we have to wait over 1000 days!

    ReplyDelete
  46. The only hope now is a push forward.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I have to say I expected disney, even other animation studios to lay off their employees in favor of sourcing their work outside the us, but not dreamworks, which in my opinion did a majority if not all of their work in the us. I am disappointed at this bit of news and this just shows that not even a successful company like dreamworks isn't immune to overall earnings.

    ReplyDelete
  48. We can only hope!

  49. It stands for 'General Certificate of Secondary Education' in England. We chose specific subjects in our year 9, when we turn from 13-14 years old, and study them until the end of what we call year 11, so that's the year we turn 16. We take these exams at the end of the year and are results go on our CV's. So when we're applying for jobs they'll always look at what GCSE's we have. Then we go to collage until we're 18 and then we're free to either go to university or just go straight into a job. Does that make any sense?:)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Ziggerastica's KalevalaJanuary 27, 2015 at 6:40 AM

    Yes.
Here we have the SAT and/or ACT. Plus each state has their own end-of-the-year standardized museum beginning in 3rd grade. After high school, we have the option to go to a college or university or go to a community college first. There's even some "early colleges" that some partake in as their high school. But alas, we have 12 years, and that wasn't enough time for me to age up to legal solo driving age in my state, which is higher than other states (some let you have a license by age 16).

    ReplyDelete
  51. Cool. It's quite funny how nearly every country/state has different exam and schooling methods/tests yet we're all in the same big world:) We're allowed to get a driving license when we're 17 over here which is still quite young I think:)

    ReplyDelete
  52. I feel so sorry for the people who have worked hard so far, and are losing their jobs... And if they were working on a franchise, say HTTYD, I can only imagine how frustrating and awful it may feel to be shut out now.

Here, I think it depends on your state's liberalism. California is a very liberal town that gets away with too many misendeavors. They allow students a license by age 16. But in my state, we have to take an intense week in driver's class, then go through 3 phases over the next 3.5 years. We don't actually get to have a legal license until we're 18 and graduated high school. Considering the high school drop-outs and that I began school a year too early, that's kind of cruel.

I started at age 4 while everyone else was 5. Though at first I thought it was because I happened to have a late birthday. As for middle school / junior high (here, secondary school means post-college training, such as medical school), the states vary between starting in 6th (Arizona) and 7th (Hawai'i) grade. I think high school is always 9th through 12th grade.

Well, I firmly believe the Congress is hiding a lot of passing laws. How else do they explain putting America in another trillion-dollar debt?
Oh , and they took much of the foods and flavors out of school lunch. I don't mind, but it means less options for the price and a required fruit cup. Frozen peach, strawberry-applesauce, unsliced orange (with nothing to peel the peeling). I can't stand when those are our only options of the day. But I enjoy diced pears (not the uncut ones), regular applesauce, and I found a way to cut an apple in half by poking the equator with a plastic fork. I had to when I had braces. And then the people who passed it didn't abide by it? It's amazing what bad news does to us, and there's a lot coming for us. Gas went down, however, for the first time since 2001 or so. How about in England with petrol (by the way, for you is it "gasoline" or "petrol")?

It was just for today. It was monthly free-snack Friday, where students are given a free snack if they buy lunch. Someone gave me their chocolate Goldfish graham crackers. But it was so, so dry. I wouldn't recommend trying it, because I felt it dryer than unflavorful salt (if it even exists). Two minutes of hogging the water fountain and it still wouldn't come off my taste buds.
So do people in England tend to walk a lot? In America, I rarely if ever see anyone walk beyond their suburbs, except in the urban areas like new York, where everyone has to use a city garage or travel for miles through half-lawless drivers for a single spot of parallel parking. Glad I don't live in New York.

We have a few pastures here, so I don't mind about cows. But I live near gates, lumbered forests, rain and a lake/sound/pond. And a highway. Walking home isn't an option for me. once inside a gate, there's bikeways that go forever in what's supposedly 5 miles, but near the far end we've got some horses' pastures. Anyway, I'd count walks to school. I run to and from the bus stop. Don't ask why I don't walk. It's just a habit I've been stuck with.

So how was your break from visiting the Gvine?

  116. Hope fully something to do with animation or something like that. I hate the thought of people who were good at something being put to a lower job, just because they couldn't do the job that they wanted to do (like office work)

Your lucky that I've just got back from learning excerpts from Beowulf. The Vikings come from the Anglo Saxons, a war-like group who decided to increase their territory when their Island became too small. Just as the Britons finally drove their Roman conquerors away, Anglo-Saxons attacked from what is now Germany and took over much of modern England. These Anglo-Saxons consisted of deep-sea fishermen and farmers, possibly seeking richer soil than the sands or marshes at home.
Some other Vikings include the Norse of Norway (attacked Northumbria, Scotland, Wales, & Ireland) and the Danes of Denmark (attacked eastern & southern England), whose overpopulation took them to the seas in the 9th century. They regularly pirated the British isles. The Danes made broad inroads against the English and committed terrors against the Roman-Christianity of the region along the way (sack & plunder monasteries, destroyed manuscripts, stole sacred objects, burned entire communities and threatened villagers to the sword). A Wessex king called Alfred the Great became ruler of England, and held back Danish encroachment until an 886 truce split Europe. The "Danelaw" was set in the north and east, while the Saxons ruled the south. But toward the end of the 10th century, more European Danes decided to widen the Danelaw and forced the Saxons to select Danish kings until Edward the Confessor, descendent of Alfred the Great, took over in 1042.
And there were Anglo-Saxon descendants in France called Normans (north men) since the 9th century (Normandy). Issues arose when Edward the Confessor died. William, Duke of Normandy was likewise related to Alfred the Great, but the Saxon council of elders chose Harold II instead. And so William crossed the English channel, claiming Edward promised him the crown until he conquered Harold at a seaside south England battle which in turn ended the Anglo-Saxon reign and began the Middle Ages: Battle of Hastings.
Thus over the next five years, Anglo-Saxon land was confiscated, Normans were given the governmental power and all business language was in either Latin or Norman-French. Feudalism began as the rebuilding of Europe commenced, but now that's beside the point. So I'm guessing William decided he and the Normans were more English than Viking.

And yes, it's legible. I write in print, but it's more readable than the letter we got on Valentines. Anyway, I had to click the photo and open a new tab, but I got it read. Good camera. Wish my place had that much light when running the projector. I like to videotape the glossary at the end of the year by bringing the textbook home, but it's tiring to the hand and I can't lay the book anywhere without my shadow getting cast over the words. So you're luckier than I am in that department. Anyway, the notes rom English are not far away. They're in the next comment...or above.

  122. Acacialy, my room is tiny. It's just that I have a two meter long + about one and a half meter tall. It is massive. My room is just alittle bigger than it. In summer and winter it sucks! Summer : because it's so hot, my room gets hot really quickly, and up until a couple days ago, my fan was broken. All I had was the window and that was even limited with the heat. Winter: because it gets cold ( but problery not as cold as u get it) and the weather is really unpredictable here in Melbourne. My room gets stuffy real quick and its a real annoying. When your at school, u just think, "ah, it snice and cool, I hope I left the window open so It dosent get stuffy, not too cold and not too hot.
Well that's my room for u! Tiny as ever

    "Study up"
    "Wait! You mean read?"
I have the small room because I liked its location and didn't trust my siblings near the banister (we arrived from a single-story house). My room's vent door was broken the moment we arrived. The vertical blinds are crummy. It always rains, and the blankets are thin. Recently, the blankets've been zapping me. We've gotten so used to having cumulonimbus on a sunny day that we don't even bother watching the weather for rain forecasts. But after the snow has recently melted, the air is actually warm right now so long as you have a hooded jacket.

    DeroB...DeroB...
Our system is messed out. Ever since the No Child Left Behind grant, there have been issues. I began kindergarten that very year. They basically lessened the IQ level required to advance to the next grade until high school, I think. But the issue is when you graduate, are you gonna have the brains to go to college? That alone ruins the system.
Our credit counts changed this year, and through some loophole I've been roped into taking a fourth science course. And with the senior project in English (required to pass), and an Advanced Placement (extended freshman-level college-level) Psychology, this should be busy the semester. Due to regulations on hours, we have an extra half-hour of school trailing after the classes are over. We call it seminar.
For something interesting, we occasionally get to see a movie adaptation of a book we read in English class if time allows, but after snow day, that time's been cut and everyone's behind. The school doesn't bother to let anyone know the existence of clubs until I don't even care to know. And we call the library "media center" for some reason. 85 minutes grows to be fast on test time. 60 multiple choice, 2 short answers, one essay. That sounds about average. Oh, and use the study guides but don't DEPEND on them.
How's school in the East World Hemi?
