Congratulations, How to Train Your Dragon 2!

At the Annie Awards ceremony last night, How to Train Your Dragon 2 won Best Animated Feature as well as five other awards for best directing (Dean DeBlois), best character animation (Fabio Lignini), best music (John Powell and Jónsi), best editorial (John K. Carr), and best storyboarding (Truong “Tron” Son Mai)!

DreamWorks also received the Ub Iwerks Award for Technical Achievement for its Apollo software package, which was first used on How to Train Your Dragon 2.

Overall, a fantastic night for Dragon, which won more awards than any other film present at the Annies. Congratulations to all of the winners, and all of the amazing people who contributed to this fantastic film! We fans couldn't ask for a better movie to fall in love with!

  5. Is it still the case that Dreamworks basically buy the Annie Awards, by buying memberships (and thus voting rights) for all its employees? I can't seem to find any current information, but if things are as bad as they were in 2010, when roughly 40% of the voters were Dreamworks employees, then the award still has no credibility.

In that regard, I can't claim to have any particular feelings towards a meaningless award. Well, I suppose I could be upset, in the sense that losing would have given DeBlois a nice figurative kick up the backside to do a better job on HTTYD 3. Still, if the main awards are basically rigged, then I suppose that DeBlois isn't taking them any more seriously than I am, so at least this isn't going to inflate his ego. A bit of cutting down to size would still have been nice, though.

  35. All absolutely deserved! Great job dragons! It is wonderful to see critics really appreciating all the hard work these people put into HTTYD2 in order to make it the fantastic story it is! Dean looks so happy XD

  37. Well deserved! Congratulations to the entire team! :D

  38. I've noticed that he's really enjoying these prices! Let's hope it fuels his desire to make an amazing final. Knowing that so many people enjoy your work must feel amazing :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. That would be an amazing background! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  40. I've seen him post such negative stuff earlier on. I'm glad I'm not the only one taking note of this. I assume he really didn't like HTTYD2. It's perfectly fine to have your own opinion ofcourse but he's being VERY negative on these posts.

    ReplyDelete
  41. That's an absolute copout of a cliche. Nothing but positive comments would just be an echo chamber, which is utterly pointless (well, except for scientific purposes, I presume).

If I have said something incorrect, then by all means, point it out, but don't go rejecting my points purely because they're not gushing praise.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Actually, I do like HTTYD 2. It's just that the film is very overrated, and not nearly as good as the original (which, for the record, is brilliant). Therefore, it stands to reason that, since there is no point in simply repeating what other people have said, that I'm going to be pointing out that the film is overrated, and when relevant, in what ways it is overrated (alternatively, in what ways it is not as good as the original).

    ReplyDelete
  43. How many awards is that? 8 including the Globe? Hopefully we'll add another.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Let the sheep go.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yes! They definitely deserve it!

    ReplyDelete
  46. oh my... how much longer do we need to wait? I'm excited! XD

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ah finally the movie receives something it deserves. Congratulations for everyone involved. Cheers for the dragons! :D

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm glad Dragons won! I'm pretty sure Disney fans are angry though.(Why does everythinghave to be a contest?) My only issueis that I felt like Dean took up most of the talking and didn't really let the producer speak.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I can't wait!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Just like Hiccup always says: "It is not a competition"

    ReplyDelete
  51. If it's not a contest, then why are you happy that HTTYD 2 won? For that matter, why do you have any feelings one way or another on it? What difference would it have made if some other movie had won?

For the purposes of this comment, I'm not making any claims one way another regarding the importance (or lack thereof) of awards shows. I'm simply saying that you can't have it both ways. Either it matters or it doesn't.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Long time no write here :P
There're several things that I didn't like of the movie, I know this could be better but I don't know what happened... one of them was the soundtrack, everything perfect except the jonsi part (at the beginning, not the end)

Oh and somebody can explain me how Drago could dominate one of those alpha dragons?? I don't get it :/

  53. Ziggerastica's KalevalaFebruary 5, 2015 at 3:16 PM

I kind of preferred the track when it was at the beginning than the end because the ending's tone made the demise of Drago feel too complete (suddenly, there's already a celebration), and I still think Drago will return.
I would assume Drago stole an egg after his home was burned and abused the hatchling. Just look at how eternally bleeding his Bewilderbeast is. He's also discovered how dragon skin is fireproof, which defeats any opposing dragon's initial instinct to try burning him. He never looks away or anything but stare intently at the dragons and calls his Bewilderbeast, "Here's yet another dragon to control! Possess him to bow to me!"

  59. I don't like the jonsi's track at the beginning (looks like disney way, rather than dreamworks), more than that, it doesn't connect to the first httyd, it's like breaking the soundtrack line with lyrics...
And yep I didn't like the end too!!, but not about Drago, I felt like a empty after stoik, ending with a maniac celebration instead smth more deep like the first movie, anyway I still without understand why Drago could dominate one of those super dragons (i don't assume your theory cause I believe these beasts are older than any viking)

    ReplyDelete
  60. Ziggerastica's KalevalaFebruary 6, 2015 at 3:19 PM

What I can think of is that dragons have their own stages from hatchling to titanwing, but if that's the case then why is there only a titanwing Bewilderbeast? Also, the Alpha can control any non-challenging dragon, but not a human's. Drago probably recognized the Bewilderbeast's lack of fire and covered himself in dragonskin in case the beast brought fire-breathing reinforcements. It movie does show that Valka and Drago both use the sound technique to call their dragons. But who knows how submissive or benevolent his Bewilderbeast would have been if it wasn't taken by him? The exact age where a dragon can no longer be trained has never been described in the series or films.

  61. Oh yeah, Icelandiceel, I'm not sure if you have seen this already or not, but looks what I found about the television series:

  66. I only made the comment because I thought it was nice that they won. I really don't care about the award shows that much, but I felt like saying something. If BH6 had won, I would've been happy with that too. Dragons and BH6 are both good movies.

  79. Yeah he does. Can't wait for a DreamWorks-uary of HTTYD2 and maybe even RotG. Heck, he skipped over Puss in Boots.

    ReplyDelete
  80. he did a review with his brother but he could do another review like he did for frozen

    ReplyDelete
  81. http://youtu.be/4KutqLyNY_s your amazing cate and i hope dean doesn't kill valka off after rewatching httyd2 i understand why they kill stoick i know some fans even on this site felt hiccup was forced to be leader but him avenging his dad's honor shows just how strong of bond they had i sort of picture it like tarzan and kerchack's relationship speaking of which tarzan is also a coming of age story seen as an outcast but in the end viewed as a hero lion king also follows some of that formula but i think tarzan hits the mark better in comparison

    ReplyDelete
  82. Haha it was funny how he kept referring to Hiccup as 'The boy'

    ReplyDelete
  83. http://www.cressidacowell.co.uk/pages/blog_01/blog_item.asp?Blog_01ID=207 book 12 hits stores in september i hope it ends on a strong note cuz dean is gonna leave the question as to why dragons don't exist for the original story not the animated verse kind of a let down

    ReplyDelete
  84. Not, a dreamworks-uary review so it doesn't completely count. Now the Chest A. Bum review on the other hand.... XD

  86. btw i did research on some on chris sanders he drew the mufasa ghost scene from lion king and wrote a whole new world in aladdin i always wondered why romantic flight looked near identical lol

    ReplyDelete
  87. Oh my gosh really!? That's awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  88. While yes, this one was a bit off compared to the original, it sure as hell isn't overrated, Frozen and Big Hero 6 are. Disney are just earning money milking that snowball throwing blondie and BH6 is just feeding off Frozen's fame.

Now to why I preferred the first. The others had more screentime, it was all Toothless and Hiccup in this one, Astrid had only about a quarter of the lines in this one compared to the original, and she was a bloody main character. DreamWorks, up your damn game with the others, don't live off the two overrated ones, I HATE it when that happens.
Look, I'm gonna get a lot of shizz for this, but I will compare it with FNAF. The creator of FNAF, Scott Cawthon, knew Foxy was the most popular character. What did he do? Give the fans a middle finger and chose Bonnie and Freddy as the main lads. Chica was left to rot most of the time which was sad as she was my main character, but it was funny as f*** to watch the fans freak when Foxy was reported to have been scrapped.
