DreamWorks has recently released a new story app under DreamWorks Press! The iPhone app lets the reader join Hiccup and Toothless' adventures in new lands and introduces you to new dragons!
Want to try out the new app yourself? We are giving away two free copies of the app, one on Twitter and one on Tumblr (share both posts for two chances to win)! The two winners will be chosen on August 3 at 12 pm PT! Good luck! If you don't win, you can still download the app on the App Store for $4.99.
The app is kind of a mix between a game and physical picture book. It features a new (adorable) art style that is flatter and more stylized than the film, but still keeps a lot of the character's small details. There is also a 3D mini-game where the reader can play fetch with Toothless:
In the story, you start out floating underwater, holding what turns out to be a dragon egg with no memory of who you are. After reaching the surface, you meet Hiccup and Toothless, who decide to help you hatch the egg and figure out your past.
At the moment, only the first book is available in the app, with at least one other book planned. In the first book, Hiccup and Toothless accidentally give you a tour of Berk and introduce you to the other main characters: Astrid, Snotlout, Fishlegs, Ruffnut, and Tuffnut.
Although it's a bit difficult figuring out how to control the story (it gives you no indication of when to swipe to the next page, and there is no immediate feedback telling you if your swipe was successful), the story is fun to read through.
It's an clearly designed with younger players in mind, but the story and art are entertaining for older dragon fans as well. It's also very nicely combines the TV show world with the film world, with references to Dagur, and briefly, Bucket. (It's good to know that they will still be alive by the second film.)
This is definitely an app you should add to your dragon app collection! It will be fun to see where they go with the rest of the story. Hopefully, this story will end up developing in parallel with the TV show world and the movie world in the future.
