How to Train Your Excitement: A Spoiler-Free Review

What are your thoughts on How to Train Your Dragon 2?  Leave your own (spoiler-free) review of the film below in the comments!

No film in human history has as many dragons as How to Train Your Dragon. Except now. How to Train Your Dragon 2 has more dragons. It has so many dragons that there may not be a single dragonless shot in the entire film. Try to find one. Good luck.

However, if you walk into the theater tomorrow with the intention of counting dragons, you may be one of the few people who finds Dragons 2 less exciting than the previous film.

I had the amazing opportunity to see an advance screening of Dragons 2 last weekend in a theater full of people from DreamWorks. There is something special about seeing the film with people so closely connected to it. You can tell how much love and care went into making this film for us. And it shows. Dragons 2 is gorgeous. I have never seen any animated film come close to the level of visual impressiveness of the first film. Dragons 2 pushes beyond that into new territory. The story is also incredibly moving. It is impossible to watch the film without feeling like your heart has been ripped out. I'm still waiting for #DragonsChallenge7: Can you make it out of the film without crying?

This may come as a shock, but How to Train Your Dragon 2 is not really about training dragons. Nor is How to Train Your Dragon, though. The first film is about relationships. Hiccup learns that is real gift isn't his strength or ferocity, but the ability to communicate and bond with others. He has to learn to handle the complexity of multiple relationships — father and son, chief and heir, Viking and tribe, dragons and Vikings, and of course, boy and dragon — all at the same time.

In Dragons 2, Hiccup again must tackle the challenges thrown at him from the many worlds to which he belongs. He struggles with what is expected of him versus what he thinks is right, and he tries to use his talent at diplomacy and compassion to prevent another disaster on Berk. However, in Dragons 2 these gifts prove to be less useful. Hiccup's relationship with Toothless pays off in the end and saves his tribe. But though Hiccup spends much of the the film trying to convince us that diplomacy is the answer, he ultimately fails.

Is How to Train Your Dragon 2 a worthy sequel to the amazing first film? I think it is. But I am worried people are going to try to compare it to How to Train Your Dragon when the two are incredibly different films. Although I don't feel like I love the sequel at the same level as the original, I also haven't been exploring every second of the film for the last four years.

Animation-loving dragon fans are irritatingly good at finding and studying moments that make a film special. One moment that stands out for me is a little head movement Valka makes early in the film. I am sure this movement will be analyzed to death on this site after the release date. You may miss it if you blink, but I think it is a brilliant piece of funny physical characterization.

These tiny moments are some of my favorite parts of How to Train Your Dragon and are the reason I feel uncomfortable comparing it to the iceberg tip that I saw when I watched How to Train Your Dragon 2 for the first time. Nevertheless, I do expect a large number of dragon fans will (eventually) prefer the sequel to the original. There are just as many of these gems in Dragon 2 — we just haven't found them all yet. I have a feeling this film will be just as well-loved as Dragons 1.

It can't be easy to make a sequel. It must be incredibly difficult to decide which elements of the original world should be kept and which can be changed. I had no clue what to expect from the film, but Dragons 2 seems to know what audience members want, and it delivered. In fact, if this movie doesn't win Best Animated Feature, I will eat an entire Bewilderbeast. The amount of care DreamWorks has put into this film is incredible. How to Train Your Dragon 2 goes beyond the world of the original not only in quantity of dragons to be trained, but also in ambition and heart.

After you see How to Train Your Dragon 2, you too will know what it feels like to be Hiccup when he stumbles into Valka's beautiful dragon sanctuary and mumbles, "I don't have the words."

  13. Which time should I go to? My dad is picking me up at 9:50 and we're going to order tickets early and then go for breakfast. I kind of like the time for 3:15 or 6:50, but then the theater will probably be packed since people'll get off work.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yep, we heard. It's already a topic we discussed in TV Series. ^_^

  19. DREAMWORKS HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2

Something is keeping this movie from a full 10 score. I don't know what it is though......
Anyway, this movie was spectacular. I am not being biased when I say it was good, because... IT WAS GOOD. This movie was not a sequel created for the sake of making a sequel, it was a movie that really had the thought put into it. The story had great depth and complexity and appealed to both audiences.

The pacing was good. I wish that more new dragons were explained though. The animation was incredible and the detail was amazing. The movie appeals to a surprisingly large audience, covering darker aspects and keeping enough elements to keep it kiddy. It was perfectly balanced.

I also just want to say that the first half of the movie felt HTTYDish, but the second half felt like Transformers epicness with dragons. Not that it is a bad thing.

If I had to be picky, I would say that Drago did not get enough character development.

  20. Oh, it doesn't let me edit....... BTW: yes I did see an advanced screening too...

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm going tomorrow, too. I feel like going a day earlier isn't right for some reason. But people usually don't get off work to like around 4 or 6 o'clock...xP I guess I'll just figure it out later...

    ReplyDelete
  22. This was a good review, it makes me feel excited. I think it depends how people view the character development; but I guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow to see what it's like. xD

  25. There is nothing more I would like than to watch the timer for HTTYD2 tick of till the end with all of you, but it will be 6 in the morning in my timezone and the last day of school is tommorow, in the morning. Since I can`t hold my speech at that time I will do it now:
Since June 2013, the time I found the grapevine, I was thrilled to see that I`m not the only one who loves this series as I do. It was amazing to see how many friendly people there were back then, and how many friendly people there are now! In that time I was, for some reason, afraid to join the conversation, I probably thought I was too ignorent of when it came to the series. The truth is I wasn`t. Reading the comments was the most fun I had in my free time, knowing that all around the world there are people I can talk to without the fear of them rejecting me. A few months later I decided to join the conversation, and that was a very good decision. Every morning I would wake up and think:"I wonder if there is any news on the grapevine!". When we heard the air date of HTTYD2 I, like everyone else thought this was going to take forever. And it did, but to think that all of those friendly people who talk to me on disqus and plug.dj, who opened their doors to me are going to see the movie and feel fantastic about it, it fills my hearth:) Also, special thanks to Nightshade, Cathrin Desbiens, Ghettoking and Dragon Wings!
God bless you all, may the force be with you and good night!

  56. I agree with you completely on being too scared to join the conversation; I knew about this place for a year before I started to post comments. I have a speech to. I live in the west coast, but (knowing me) I'll probably fall asleep or something at the time the count down hits 0. (Having said that I probably won't, but still) I wanted to congratulate everyone here. We've been waiting for this for years now; through graduations, bad school days, cliff hanger trailers and horrible spoilers. A few days ago, I started looking through the older posts and comments. It made me laugh to see "How to train your dragon 2 potential names" or, " 144 days left isn't that much." After a bad day, you guys and the "Dragon Riders!" (-Tuffnut) have always been able to cheer me up. We have an awesome online family here "even the people who came, like, two days ago" and I hope that we're all just as close as we are now when it's time to do this for the third movie.

  62. It's too bad we're leaving for vacation in 3 hours. The movie is in 30 mins, but eh. u know how things are crazy before an overnight trip

  64. At first I was like "Is that normal?" and my mom looks at me and laughs. xP I'm not an expert in makeup and whatnot!

  65. Me neither. I'm not an expert at it!

    ReplyDelete
  66. My local theater had an early showing a few hours ago and let me just say, oh my gosh. I'm breathtaken at how amazingly beautiful this movie is. I cried the whole time. Heck, I was sobbing during the intro. I agree, I do think that the fandom will eventually pick this movie as their favorite. I love it so much.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Just saw the film.... after sobbing for a good ten minutes I can appreciate how wonderful it really was (and that includes both the good and sad moments)! This is a beautiful example perfect animation and storytelling! This film has really grown from the first one, and I eagerly await to see DreamWorks send me on another emotional roller coaster in the third film!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I just got back from the theaters, having just watched it, and I can say without even a tiny bit of doubt that it was AMAZING. The music, the animation, the battle scenes, everything, was so perfect. It was everything I could have possibly wished for and more. I'm looking forward to seeing it again as soon as possible.

    ReplyDelete
  69. The movie theater opens at 12:00 tomorrow and closes at 10:00. I'll have a lot of time! xD YES! I'm being picked up at 9:50 and buying tickets for 12:50 I guess, because my Dad wants to see it at that time and I suppose it'll be okay. xP I duuuunooo, does anyone else like seeing movies around night hours or is that just me?

  75. It won't be too hard to get a picture XD

    ReplyDelete
  76. XD Probably not, but i'll take a video of it and take screenshots and blablabla... Like I did when we were waiting for it to hit double digits XD

    ReplyDelete
  77. Alright :D Ill try to get a shot when there's one second left

    ReplyDelete
  78. 15 minutes!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Me too :D It's a very important moment, so it is needed :3

    ReplyDelete
  80. I went into the countdown thinking no movie could make me cry again, not since my brother told me when I was a kid to toughen up and stop crying. Since then no film, until the one at 8 pm tonight, has made me tear up. Hiccup tries to be a man all his own, tries to stick by his beliefs and listen to everyone but ultimately we see he is still young and very human.. and makes very human mistakes, much like any young person trying to make their way in the world. There were brilliant grinning moments, lovely blissful moments, bittersweet moments, tear your heart out moments and moments that made you want to scream in victory. A brilliant film, in its own right.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I still can't believe it. We've been waiting so long for this, and now that its here, it just seems so surreal...

  109. Here we go, the official anthem of Berk' Grapevine.
    "let It Fly"
The Vines alive, it's like a dragon hive
Not a comment is hidden from sight
    A website of buzzing fandom
With Dragons and teens, oh so bright
The comments pour in and the joy bubbles inside.
    Couldn't keep it in;
    The Gods knows I've tried

    Don't let them in,
    don't let them see
Read the comments, stay silent, be good please
    Conceal, don't feel,
    don't let them know
    Well now they know

Let it fly, let it fly
    Can't hold it back anymore
Let it fly, let it fly
Turn back round, pull open the door
    I don't care
    What the comments say
    Let the dragons come
The wait never bothered me anyway

It's funny how a fan site
    Makes everything seem small
    And that poised, secretive person
    That wasn't me at all.

It's time to see what I can do
To test my trolling and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules, you see
    I'm me!

Let it fly, let it fly
I will join you in with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
    You'll always see me fly
    Here I go
    And I'm in the air
    Let the dragons come

This fandom has a power to be recognized
The people here will make you understand and realize...
...That dragons, dragons and dragons are all you need
I always loved it here, and never shall I leave

Let it fly, let it fly
And I'll jump and dance oh so happy
Let it fly, let it fly
I feel so full of glee
    Now I go
    To the theatre, away!
    Let the dragons come!

The wait never bothered me anyway!

    ReplyDelete
  110. Plz comment if you like it.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Its pretty cool

    ReplyDelete
  112. Wow! That was amazing; I wish I could write parodies like that.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I have watched the movie 2 times in 2 days and I still want to watch it again and agian

    ReplyDelete
  114. Goodnight everyone. and for those of us who still have a while to wait, hang in there!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Hey! I posted this yesterday,:)

    ReplyDelete
  116. I had a similar fear a year ago, not here but on youtube, when I came across the HTTYD circle (inhonoredglory was the first one I saw there) I was almost afraid to say anything, and sat with my words typed for minutes debating about whether to hit the enter key, after having watched their videos countless times over and over and reading their loving comments to each other. It almost felt like it was a world too good for me to be a part of, but once I commented they replied and welcomed me into their world. I found the same shortly after at the grapevine. I started out writing reviews, and was amazed that they actually got likes most of the time to all of the time. It was like; really? People respect my opinion that much? There was one time a group of people disliked my comment (I can't even remember what it was about) and someone on here stood up for me, which made me ultimately gain the trust of the people here and encouraged me to comment more. Sure, I can be a pain sometimes and I tend to keep to myself. But I am forever grateful to know you people and all the wonderful conversations we have had, all the debates and all the waiting together. It was all really fun, and now we wait for the story to live on in HTTYD 3. Another count down begins.

    ReplyDelete
  117. OKAY, I'll try! *Heavy breathing*

    ReplyDelete
  118. I saw the movie, and you guys are going to love it! :D

    ReplyDelete
  119. Night, and remember, I AM YOUR GOD

    ReplyDelete
  120. Well, in an hour time frame I have to disagree with you. They put in what they thought was the best thing, and ultimately I would give it a 10/10. Drago had development moments, but I don't think we have seen the last of him. I will explain later, after everyone on here has started talking more about it. So.. I won't spoil it for anyone, but ya. As for the second part of the movie feeling transformer-ish... Well, maybe so.. but the things I think you are referring to are not robotics but just untapped potential that Hiccup nor Toothless realized they held until they were put to the test.

  121. I just got back from the theatre and I have to say that I'm reeeaaally impressed with this one, especially with how they managed to fit in a lot of things within an hour and 42-minute time frame. The animation and quality was seriously out of this world! I can tell you're all gonna love it dearly. :)

One a personal note, I cried exactly six times. (Crying, in my agenda, having at least a single tear released from the eyes--yes i know i am wEAK)
Post-Traumatic Stress from Dragons ;u; (apologies to anybody bothered by that ←)

One of the very FEW things I wished they had worked a little better on was Jónsi's cue during Hiccup and Toothless's flight scene right after Dragon Racing (which you've all seen in the 5 minute preview)--let's just say I kinda preferred the arrange that was in the 5 minute preview. ^^
    Other than that: i-can't-find-a-word-that-accurately-sums-up-my-overwhelming-feelings-about-this-movie-but-i-know-you'll-love-it-too ♥

Cheers to everyone at DWA who helped make this possible, and to us--the fandom, to the road down to the premiere of HTTYD3.

  141. that's fake, it normally contains a virus.
the real movie wouldnt be 700mb large, in 720p it would be around 7gb

    ReplyDelete
  142. HAPPY DRAGON NEW YEAR! :D

    ReplyDelete
  143. The computer didn`t detect a virus, and 7gb are way too much even for 1080p. I know because The wolf of wall street is 3 hours long, 1080p, and yet 2gb.

    ReplyDelete
  144. I have httyd1 in 1080p and it takes about 18gb

    ReplyDelete
  145. wtf? On torrent it`s only 1.3gb in 1080p (HTTYD1)

I thought it was pretty good.
However, I still say its a 9 out of 10.
There were some things I didn't like.

  148. ❀ωαѕвσяи¢яαzу❀June 13, 2014 at 6:37 AM

I'm really annoyed. My friend felt the need to throw frozen coke at my face during HTTYD 2. And it was advanced screening too!

  149. The Whisperer of DeathJune 13, 2014 at 6:39 AM

    Oh, that's gotta suck.
When I went to the screening last week, my cousin yelled out "GAY!" when Gobber said the line.
    *Facepalm*

  150. and one more thing, you dont think that its a bit weird that 5 different users uploaded httyd2 with almost the same name, only difference is that one had 720p in the name, Santi is a new user and he is not the one who makes HDTV videos.
and I just realised why my httyd1 is large, I have 1080p blu ray with 5.1 dolby surround sound, 256 kbit/s sound.

    ReplyDelete
  151. let`s just wait and I`ll update you on anything, I`m not thinking you`re wrong, but it`s all I`ve got for now

I just realised the hint we got in RoB towards the new stables in the 2nd movie.
    lol

  153. thethe fact that the torrwnts have been deleted from tpb makes it a little bit suspicious, im pretty sure that i was right

    ReplyDelete
  154. I woke up at 6 o'clock because of the dogs barking and this weird tribal music downstairs. xD Like, how'd it turn on? Did the dogs open the file and play it at full volume blast? Maybe someone snuck into the house and loved him/her some tribal music. The music was from the automatic music that you get on computers... xP

    Also, saw this on Tumblr;
How to Survive Watching How to Train Your Dragon 2~
    1.You won’t.
    2.Don’t even try.
    3.There will be no survivors.
    4. It’s not gonna happen~

    ReplyDelete
  155. It`s real, but you have to complete some offers (you have to pay) to get the password for watching the movie, so you were half right.

    ReplyDelete
  156. And when you have payed, you wont get it, Its scamming...

    ReplyDelete
  157. People have kept on sending me messages about someone dying and I don't know why they're sending me the messages! I refuse to believe them until I see the actual movie! Please keep in mind every website you go to, don't post spoilers or rumors you've heard about in this movie, please.

    ReplyDelete
  158. DRAGONS! I got my shirt on, it's still too big and it's very hot in this house. o_0 But I'm so excited! Being picked up at 9:50, going to breakfast, and than the theater at 12:00 to get tickets and the movie'll start at 12:50!<3

    ReplyDelete
  159. Also, does anyone realize Hiccup's ideas from When Lightning Strikes is in the second movie? I noticed it while watching the five minute clip to get hyped up for the movie. There are improved perches, landing areas, stables under the caves of the village, even feeding stations now. The landing area is that big circle thing; it's surrounded by these little yellow things where dragons can sit. [I assume]

[sorry for all these comments, I'm just so happy today.]

  164. i saw the movie yesterday. it was amazing i want to watch it over an over again.
If you had any fears about the movie rest assure it wont disappoint. Better than the first movie, frozen does not even come close to the sheer awesomeness of this sequel. Although you may not see definite cliff hanger to lead you into the third and last movie it is there. If you had plans to see another movie today cancel them because you are gonna want to see this movie now! The 3D version is amazing and i am gonna go see it again soon.

  173. Only a few nitpicks I have from this movie:

    1. The gang, except Astrid and some parts of Ruffnut, doesn't interact much with Hiccup, and Snotlout and Fishlegs have relatively smaller roles.

    2. The new Dragons aren't introduced thoroughly as they were in the first movie. Timberjack and Thunderdrum only appear as cameos, Whispering Death is mentioned, and despite previously rumored, Snaptrapper doesn't even appear at all, and Seashocker has extremely minor appearance.

I also happened to notice Barf and Belch, as well several Zipplebacks, performed their hidden battle skills, it's awesome! Other than those, lots of awesome things happened, and I like it! That is all :D
